The Bridge Program started in earnest this week with orientation activities organized by the Summer Training Academy for Research in the Sciences (STARS) program. As per tradition, one of the first events was a little team building exercise we like to call the ropes course.
The UCSD-Morehouse Physics Bridge program has selected its first class of Bridge Scholars for 2014. They are (from left to right): Christian Aganze (2nd year, Physics/Electrical Engineering), Jeremy Ariche (2nd year, Physics), Saidou N’gaide’ (2nd year, Applied Physics/Aerospace Engineering), Julian Pilate-Hutcherson (3rd year, Applied Physics/Civil Engineering) and Jarrhett Butler (4th year, Applied Physics/Nuclear Engineering). Each of these students will be paired with one the UCSD faculty mentors for an 8-week research position and graduate preparation training.
Students from Morehouse and Spelman Colleges who meet GPA and credit eligibility can participate in a unique exchange program, spending from a quarter to a year at UCSD. Participants in the Bridge Program can use the Exchange to extend their UCSD visit through the following Fall quarter or the entire year.
The Application deadline for 2014-2015 is
February 14, 2014. (TBD) For more information, visit http://marshall.ucsd.edu/programs/spelman-morehouse-exchange-program.html
Morehouse students participating the UCSD-Morehouse Bridge Program will participate in the Summer Training Academy for Research in the Sciences, or STARS program. This 8-week academy compliments the research activities with graduate preparation and training, including GRE preparation, graduate school workshops, introduction to and essay-writing workshops for the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship, and an opportunity to present research at the UCSD Summer Research Conference.
The STARS program is run by the Office of Graduate Studies by Veronica Henson-Phillips. For more information, visit http://ogs.ucsd.edu/student-affairs/summer-research/stars/
UCSD professors Thomas Murphy and Adam Burgasser visited Morehouse College in November to meet with Physics faculty members, including Profs. Willie Rockward (left) and Aakhut Bat (right), and students, in preparation for this summer’s UCSD-Morehouse Physics Summer Bridge Program. Three Morehouse students will be supported this year for an 8-week summer research and graduate training program at UC San Diego. Both Murphy and Burgasser gave talks on their research to Morehouse Physics majors; Burgasser’s talk can be viewed on YouTube.
